Throughout high school I strived to do my best in everything I did academically. I set goals early in my school career because I have always known where I wanted my life to go. High school for me was not exactly a struggle, more like just something to get through. I did not have to try extremely hard to get good grades, even though I was enrolled in mostly honors courses.
I was just a little baby freshman at Warwick Veterans Memorial when I met Mr. Kennedy. No one ever called him Mr. Kennedy though, her preferred to be called 'JK'. I remember the first day I had his class. It was the first day of third quarter, which meant it was the first day of health class. I walked into the classroom shyly, and walked to an empty seat. Before the class even began I made a sarcastic comment which he did not like at all. My face blushed, and I thought that that marking quarter with him was going to be hell. I thought he was going to be the biggest jerk I had ever met, but I could not have been more wrong.
After only a week of having that class, it was my absolute favorite. Like I said before, I was a shy girl, but JK made me feel beyond comfortable in his class. He assigned us a "Health Change" project at the beginning of the quarter that was due the last week of the class. JK made us chose one thing about our lives that we wanted to change for the better. We then had to write fifteen journal entries about our progress with our change that JK would read and give feedback on.
For my health change, I decided to lose weight. Im not sure why, but in my journal entries I decided to share all my insecurities about myself. I honestly do not know what it was about JK, he just made me open up. At the end of that quarter I was so happy to have had him for a teacher, and I felt like I had an adult outside of my family that I could talk to if I ever needed to.
After that first year I had JK for sophomore and junior year health class. Each year he assigned the same quarterly 'health change' project, and each year he helped me grow as a person. For my sophomore year 'change' I chose to get more fit, but for my junior year 'change' I decided to work on becoming more comfortable with myself. Not a lot of people really knew how I felt about myself but I felt like I could tell JK with out feeling judged. By the end of my project I was happy to say that it really did help me.
I am so grateful for meeting JK and having him as a teacher. I can honestly say that I do not believe my high school experience would have been nearly the same if it was not for him. Having his advice and support rather than criticism helped me to become more comfortable with myself. I started to come out of my shell and stopped being so insecure around others. James Kennedy has had a huge impact on my life, and I could be more thankful.
